Lion’s association with monarchy and kingship would seem to disqualify them from prominent roles in Washington, DC and yet there are thousands of them, each with a different story. Having spent several decades walking around Washington, D.C. the prevalence of lions in art and architecture throughout DC has always felt strange to me. Being the capitol of a country, born out of revolution and a refusal to be ruled by a king (A king with a family crest that features a lion) we make a habit of placing lions of infinite variety in public and private art and monuments. I started this project to look more deeply into the stories behind the art and architecture I pass every day and hopefully I can find the lions that inspired it all.
